Hi,
I've been using PNG Gauntlet for months now and it's a great program.
My method of crushing is to run the Megaopt batch script then Gauntlet afterwards. For months now I always believed that Gauntlet was giving me 2% more savings after Megaopt... but that was because I never ran Megaopt properly in the first place.
Now it seems Gauntlet doesn't deliver as good results as I thought.
That's probably because Megaopt includes PNGOut and PNGRewrite already, and the same optimization is done before Gauntlet. I typically get "100%"'s in Gauntlet now.
But I still use Gauntlet sometimes because I like the GUI. But it needs to be made even better! For example, make previous settings saved for the next session. How about options for all the advanced PNGOut functions? And maybe drag-and-drop functionality... ie drop files/folders into the window and BOOM it's done.
If all the PNGOut options were available in a GUI it would be nicer/easier to explore different settings without having to type long lines over and over in command prompt.
Right now my main crusher is Megaopt (5 crushers: PNGOut, OptiPNG, AdvPNG, PNGRewrite, and PNGCrush) and I have it a shortcut in my quicklaunch bar. I just drag a folder onto it and BOOM, crushing goes automatically and disappears when done. Can't get much simpler than that!

Sounds good to me, I might check out megaopt, that way I wouldn't need PNGGauntlet either!
BTW, you can drop folders onto the main PNGGauntlet window to have them added, I believe.Posted 5 years ago # -
A little more reply:
While Megaopt seems cool, it also seems redundant. PNGCrush isn't as good as PNGOut, PNGOut does what PNGRewrite does already, etc. I'm guessing that some combination of PNGOut, AdvPNG, and OptiPNG would work, though just PNGOut or just AdvPNG, with the right options could be enough.
The ability to drag folders right onto the icon is very nice, though some of the point of creating a GUI for PNGOut in the first place was so I could see a nice little report of how things got smaller.Posted 5 years ago # -
Having tested all the PNG software you talk about it would appear that Megaopt is just a more redundant version of PNG Gauntlet.
PNGOut is by far the best of the utilites you can use, and in fact if you use a PNGOut optimised file with PNGRewrite it can sometimes mean the PNGRewrite INCREASES the file size.
PNGOut does much more, and does it better, than all those packages. AdvPNG is good, but doesn't work as well with all images.
It just seems that MegaOpt is a redunant GUI with a few more options to play with, and la lot of bloat.Posted 5 years ago # -
DarkCryst, thanks for looking at those for me. The only one I was really interested in was AdvPNG, because I had heard it could outperform PNGOut, but you say it dosen't?Posted 5 years ago #
